About Ghost Tags

A ghost tag is a marker tag that is automatically added to a segment when the segment contains an incomplete tag pair. For example, if you delete a tag that is one half of a pair, the system will automatically display a ghost tag until you replace the missing tag. Ghost tags only occur in tag pairs, as only tag pairs require a beginning and an end tag to function correctly.

A ghost tag looks like a grayed-out version of an ordinary tag. You cannot edit ghost tags but you can restore ghost tags to a real tag.

If you save a document that contains ghost tags, an error message is displayed in the Messages window informing you that a ghost tag has been found in the document. If you double-click on this message, you are taken to the location of the ghost tag where you can restore it to a real tag.
