This topic describes how to insert tags and apply formatting to a target language segment in the Editor window in the Editor view.

By default, SDL Trados Studio settings specify that recognized formatting tags are hidden, therefore tags remain hidden when inserted and instead the text is formatted in the style used in the Editor window. To insert tags from a source language segment:
In the Editor window, click inside the target segment where you want the tag to be inserted or select the text that you want to be enclosed in tags.
Place the cursor over one of the tags in the source segment press Ctrl. The tag and the text that it is encloses are highlighted in gold.
Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the tag in the source segment text. The tag pair is inserted into the target segment at the point where the cursor is located. Click inside the tag pair and start typing. Alternatively, if you had selected text in the target segment, that text is now enclosed in the tag pair.
To insert tags from the QuickInsert toolbar:
In the Editor window, select the text to be formatted and click the required button on the QuickInsert toolbar. The tag formatting is applied to the selected text. Or,
In the Editor window, place the cursor in the target segment where you want the tags to be inserted and click the required button on the QuickInsert toolbar. The tag pair appears in the target segment. Click inside the tag pair and start typing the text to be formatted. When you have finished typing, click outside the tag pair.
To insert tags using QuickPlace:
When the cursor is at the point where you want to insert a tag in the Editor window, right-click and select QuickPlace from the shortcut menu. A list of tags is displayed in the QuickPlace dialog box.
The first tag is selected automatically.
If this is the required tag, double-click or press Enter to insert the tag into the target segment. If the tag is one of a pair, a ghost tag is also inserted.
If this is not the tag you want to insert, select different tags until the correct one is selected and then press Enter to insert the tag into the target segment.
Continue typing. The selected tag formatting is applied to the text.
When you want
the formatting to stop being applied, right-click and select QuickPlace from the shortcut menu. The
QuickPlace dialog box is
displayed. Select the closing tag
click OK to insert it into the document.
To insert tags from a drop-down list:
When the cursor
is at the point where you want to insert a tag in the Editor
window, press Ctrl+,(comma). A drop-down list of tags
is displayed below the target segment.

If you are applying formatting tags, for example bold, the formatting may appear as sample text that is formatted in the drop-down list.

The first tag is selected automatically. In the source segment, the text formatted by the tag is highlighted.
If this is the required tag, press Enter or Tab to insert the tag into the target segment. If the tag is one of a pair, a ghost tag is also inserted.
If this is not the tag you want to insert, select different tags until the correct one is selected and then insert the tag into the target segment.
Continue typing. The selected tag formatting is applied to the text.
When you want
the formatting to stop being applied, press Ctrl+,(comma) to insert the closing tag
of the pair. Alternatively, press Ctrl+,(comma) to display the closing tag
for selection.
To copy and paste individual tags:
In the source
segment in the Editor
window, select the required tag by clicking on the tag. The tag
changes to the following display
.
Copy the tag to the clipboard. You can either press Ctrl+C or right-click and select Copy from the shortcut menu.
Place the cursor in the target segment at the point where you want the tag to appear and paste the tag into the segment. To paste the tag, you can either press Ctrl+V or right-click and select Paste from the shortcut menu.
If the tag is part of a pair, a ghost tag is also inserted. The ghost tag is there to remind you that you need to copy the second tag into the segment.
Type the text to be formatted by the tag pair.
Repeat steps 1-3 to insert the closing tag of the pair. The ghost tag disappears.
You can also use this method to copy and paste individual placeholder tags.
