How to Show/Hide Text Formatting

This topic describes how to toggle on and off the display of text formatting in the Editor window. By default, text displayed in the Editor window in the Editor view is displayed in WYSIWYG format. This means that any formatting applied to the original document text is visible in the Editor window. For example, text that has bold formatting applied is displayed in bold and underlined text is underlined. If you prefer, you can choose to display text without formatting applied.

If you decide not to display text with formatting applied, you can still establish what formatting was originally applied to text as this information is stored in the document formatting tags.

To show/hide text formatting:

  1. In the Editor view, select Tools > Options from the menu bar. The Options dialog box is displayed.

  2. Select Editor from the navigation tree. The Editor settings are displayed on the right.

  3. Formatting display is controlled from the Formatting display style drop-down list. This box appears under Side-by-side Editor.

  4. If you do not want formatting to be applied to text, select Show all tags but do not show formatting.

  5. If you want to display formatting but not standard formatting tags, select Show formatting but hide recognized formatting tags.

  6. If you want to display formatting and all formatting tags, select Show all formatting and all tags.

  1. Click OK to save the settings and close the Options dialog box.
