About Pseudo-translation

Pseudo-translation is a procedure which simulates how a translated document will look after translation and how much extra DTP or other work will be required before actual translation is done. This can help in the planning of the project to set appropriate estimates and expectations.

To perform Pseudo-translation, follow the instructions in the Run a Batch Task or Task Sequence topic and choose the run the Pseudo-translate batch task or the Pseudo-translate Round Trip task sequence.

Engineering

Additional engineering work to translated documents is required in most cases. This is often due to grammatical/logical differences between source and target languages. Typical problems are:

Simulating Translation

What Pseudo-translation does to simulate translation is:

You can specify settings for the items above on the Pseudo-translate Files page under Language Pair settings.

NOTE

If the files to which you are applying the Pseudo-translate task already have confirmed or edited translations, they will not be overwritten. Pseudo-translate will only overwrite the target content if:

  • The target has a status of Not Translated.
  • The target is a copy of the source and has not been edited manually or confirmed.

Supported Dictionaries

Dictionaries can be used in Pseudo-translation to replace words in the original source language documents with words from the target language in the translated document. The words from the dictionary are not an actual translation of the source language but are picked based on their length. This allows you to see how special characters from the target language are actually displayed in the generated document.

The following dictionaries are included in your SDL Trados Studio installation and are used in Pseudo-translation. All language variants are processed with the main language dictionary. For example, German from Germany and from Switzerland are both processed with the German dictionary.

NOTE

By default, when Studio cannot find a dictionary for your selected target language, pseudo-translate uses the English dictionary instead.
