Auto-substitution > Measurements

The Translation Memory and Automated Translation > Auto-substitution settings determine the spacing used when auto-localizing measurements. Auto-localization is the process by which SDL Trados Studio automatically adapts the measurement to suit the target language of your current translation. In the case of measurements, this only changes the spacing used in the measurement and does not convert the unit of measurement to what is used in the target language.

Click here for more information about auto-localization.

These settings are only available on the language pair level, since the measurement spacing is target language-specific.

These settings appear in multiple dialog boxes in SDL Trados Studio. Click here for more information about finding the appropriate dialog box.

NOTE

  • If the recognition settings in your selected translation memory are not enabled to recognize these items, auto-localization does not occur and these items are treated as normal, translatable words.  See Translation Memory Settings.

  • Measurements are auto-localized when you insert a measurement from the source segment to the target segment during translation. If you want auto-localization to occur during pre-translation or when applying matches from the translation memory, you must also enable auto-substitution on the Auto-Substitution page.

Description

Select one of the options below to specify if a space is automatically placed between the number and unit in a measurement when translated. For example, you could choose that 4km is auto-localized to 4 km.

Use the same spacing between the number and the unit that is used in the document source segment

The same spacing between the number and unit that is used in the document's source segment is used in the auto-localized measurement. This means that there is no change in the source and translated text for this measurement.

Use the same spacing between the number and the unit that is used in the translation memory target segment

The same spacing between the number and unit that is used in the  translation memory target segment is used in the auto-localized measurement.

Never use a space between the number and unit

No space is inserted and a space if deleted if one exists between the number and unit in the auto-localized measurement.

Always insert a normal space between the number and the unit

This inserts a space between the number and unit in the auto-localized measurement.

Always insert a non-breaking space between the number and the unit

This inserts a space between the number and unit in the auto-localized measurement. Even though there is a space between the number and unit, they are never displayed on two separate lines if there is an automatic line break (line wrap).

Use a custom space between the number and unit

Select this to enable selection of a custom space.

Custom space character code:

Select the Unicode character that you want to be used as a space in the auto-localized measurement.

In the Editor window this is displayed as one normal space. When you generate the target translated document, the actual space specified is displayed.

Example

Select the Unicode character:

 U+2008 PUNCTUATION SPACE

In the Editor window this is displayed as a normal single space. When you generate the translated document, the space between the number and unit will be equal to narrow punctuation of the font. For more information about the different spacing Unicode characters, see http://www.unicode.org.
