A language pair is used to store settings relating to translation from a specific source language into a specific target language. Resources and options are typically configured for use across all language pairs to which they apply. Multilingual resources, such as termbases and server-based translation memories, may apply to more than one language pair. Bilingual resources, such as file-based translation memories, only apply to a specific language pair.

Settings that you can define are:

• Which translation memories, automated translation servers, AutoSuggest dictionaries and termbases are used. Also what settings are applied to these translation resources.
• Batch processing options.

NOTE	Individual exceptions to settings defined across all language pairs can be defined at an individual language pair level.

Specifying Settings

For example, you can change the default fuzzy matching threshold to 65% at the All Language Pairs level and it will apply to all translation memories for all language pairs. However, if you want English to German to use a different fuzzy matching threshold, you can change it at the individual language pairs level to 75%.

Selecting Translation Memories and Automated Translation Servers

In SDL Trados Studio, you typically select translation memories at the All Language Pairs level. Those translation memories are then used for every language pair they contain. However, you may want to specify translation memory selections at the individual language pair level as an exception if you want to:

• Use different translation memories.

• Change the order of the translation memories in the cascade.

• Use different settings for lookups, updates or concordance searching in a translation memory.

For example, suppose you add a multilingual server-based translation memory at the All Language Pairs level that contains English to German and English to French language pairs. However, you do not want to use this translation memory for English to French and instead want to select another translation memory. To do that, select the translation memory that you want to use at the individual language pair settings instead of the All Language Pairs level.

Where to Define your Language Pair Settings

You can specify your language pair settings in the following places:

Options Dialog Box

Default settings are located in the Options dialog box. These default settings are used when you create a project or start a new translation using the Translate Single Document command.

To display this dialog box, select File > Options. To see the available settings, select Language Pairs from the navigation tree on the left.

Project Settings Dialog Box

Settings for a language pair in the active project and active document are located in the Project Settings dialog box.

To display this dialog box, select Home tab > Project Settings. To see the available settings, select Language Pairs from the navigation tree on the left.

New Project Wizard

Settings for a language pair in a project you are in the process of creating are defined in the New Project wizard on the Translation Memory and Automated Translation page, the Termbases page and the Batch Processing Settings page. See How to Create a Project for more information.

After a project is created you can modify these settings in the Project Settings dialog box.

Project Template Settings Dialog box

Settings for a language pair in a project template can be used when you create a new project. These are defined in the Project Template Settings dialog box. You may want to create a project template if you have several customers that require different settings.

To display this dialog box:

• Select a project in the Projects view and select Home tab > Tasks group > Create Project Template. The Save Project Template dialog box is displayed. Enter a project template name and click Save.

• Click Edit in the Project Templates dialog box.

To see the available settings, select Language Pairs from the navigation tree on the left.

Batch Processing Wizard

Language pair settings are also used and can be modified when you perform any batch tasks on your project files on the Settings page of the Batch Processing wizard.
