Home Tab - Editor View

The Home tab contains the most frequently used commands for editing, formatting and translating project files in SDL Trados Studio.

The following table describes all the default groups and commands that are displayed on the Home tab when you have a document open the Editor view:

Project Settings

Click this to display the Project Settings dialog box for the active project.

Configuration

Cut

Click this to cut selected text and put it on the clipboard.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+X

Clipboard

Copy

Click this to copy selected text to the clipboard.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+C

Paste

Click this to paste the contents of the clipboard into the segment at the current cursor point.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+V

Batch Tasks

Click this to start batch processing tasks.

The Batch Tasks drop-down list is displayed. When you click a command on this list, documents that are open in Studio are closed, and the Batch Processing wizard starts.

File Action

Complete Review

Click this to approve all the unreviewed translations in the document and set their status to Translation Approved.

Any translations that do not have a status of Translation Approved or Translation Rejected are classified as unreviewed.

This option is only available if the document is open for review.

TQA Review

When you complete the review of a document that contains translation quality assessments (TQAs), Studio displays a dialog box with an overview of all TQAs. Here you can also make an overall evaluation of the document.

Complete Sign-off

Click this to approve all translations in the document except those with Translation Rejected or Sign Off Rejected status. The approved translations are set to Signed Off status.

This option is only available if the document is open for sign-off.

TQA Sign Off

When you complete the sign off of a document that contains translation quality assessments (TQAs), Studio displays a dialog box with an overview of all TQAs. Here you can also make an overall evaluation of the document.

Bold

Select a piece of text and click this to apply bold formatting to it.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+B

NOTE

You can apply bold formatting to most file types. However the tags used to indicate bold differ between file types.

Formatting

Italic

Select a piece of text and click this to apply italic formatting to it.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+I

Underline

Select a piece of text and click this to apply underline to it.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+U

Superscript

Superscript formatting makes text appear smaller than the normal line text and is set slightly above the text.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Shift+Plus Sign on the alphabetic keyboard.

Subscript

Subscript formatting makes text appear smaller than the normal line text and is set slightly below the text.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Plus Sign on the main keyboard

Small Caps

Small caps makes lower-case letters look like small versions of CAPITALS.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Shift+K

Left-To-Right

This button is useful for inserting Western words into bidirectional text.

Right-To-Left

This button is useful for inserting Arabic and Hebrew words into bidirectional text.

Show Whitespace

You can toggle on and off the display of whitespace characters in the Editor window. Click here to see a list of the whitespace symbols.

Em dash

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen on the alphabetic keypad.

En Dash

Shortcut command:Ctrl+Hyphen on the alphabetic keypad.

Non-breaking hyphen

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen on the alphabetic keypad.

Optional hyphen

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Hyphen on the alphabetic keyboard.


Soft break

A soft break is a break at the end of a line or a page. The location of a soft break adjusts automatically with a change in the margins, line length or the number of lines.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Enter

Euro

Shortcut command:Ctrl+Shift+E

Copyright

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Alt+C

Registered

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Alt+R

TradeMark

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Alt+T

German quotes

Inserts German-type quotes in the target segment at the cursor position.

English double quotes

Inserts English-type straight double quotes in the target segment at the cursor position.

French quotes

Inserts French-type quotes (guillemets) in the target segment at the cursor position.


Custom

This is a custom QuickInsert button.

You can assign commands to these buttons for each file type. For more information see About Customizing the QuickInsert Group. You can create any number of custom buttons, but the QuickInsert group only displays the first seven.

Insert Tag Launcher

Click this to launch the Insert Tag dialog box where you can access the remaining custom buttons and remove inserted formatting.

From here you can remove selected formatting by clicking the corresponding button with the red line. For example, to remove bold formatting click:  . These buttons may not be displayed for some file types by default. If this is the case, they can be called up from the Insert Tag dialog box.

NOTE

  • By default, when formatting tags are inserted, the text is formatted in the style specified by the tags, but the tags themselves are hidden.

  • If the current file type does not support a formatting type, the corresponding button is displayed but is unavailable.

Concordance Search

Click this to view results of concordance searches. The Concordance Search window is displayed.

Alternatively, click the Concordance Search tab.

Translation Memory

Select Previous Match

Click this to select the previous translation memory match in the Translation Results window.

Select Next Match

Click this to select the next translation memory match in the Translation Results window.

Apply Translation

Click this to copy the currently selected translation from the Translation Results window into the current target segment.

TM Options Launcher

 

Click this to open the Options dialog box on the Translation Results Window page.

Show Translations

Click this to display the suggested terms for this segment from the MultiTerm termbase. The terms are displayed in a drop-down list from which you can select them.

Terminology

Add New Term

Select a text to add it as a new term to the active MultiTerm termbase.

This opens the Edit Term mode in the Termbase Viewer window where you can fill all the available termbase fields and review the new term before manually saving it to the termbase.

Quick Add New Term

 

Select a text to send it as a term to the active MultiTerm termbase without entering the Edit Term mode in the Termbase Viewer window.

Use Quick Add New Term when you want to populate your termbase quickly, without filling in all the possible term fields and without manually hitting the Save Entry button.

Mandatory Fields

Termbases that contain mandatory fields cannot be updated using the Quick Add New Term. This is because Quick Add New Term only adds the source and target term for an entry. If your termbase requires you to fill in other fields for a term, use the Add New Term option instead. This opens Term Edit mode where you can manually fill in the mandatory fields.

The effect of these commands depends on how the current document is opened: translation, review or sign-off.

Segment Actions

Copy Source to Target

Click this to copy the contents of the current source segment into the corresponding target segment. The target segment is overwritten.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Ins

Copy All Source to Target

Click this to copy source language segments to the corresponding target segments, if the target segment is empty.

Nothing is overwritten by this command. Only empty target segments are affected.

Clear Target Segments

Click this to remove all content from the target segment.

Merge Segments

Click this to merge selected source segments.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Alt+S

Click here for more information about merging segments.

Split Segments

Click this to split a source segment at the cursor position.

Shortcut command: Alt+Shift+T

Click here for more information about merging segments.

Change Segment Status

Click this to remove all content from the target segment.

Automation Options Launcher

Click this to open the Options dialog box on the Automation page.

Go To

Click this to jump to the location of a particular segment by number, category, segment status. You can also navigate comments.

Navigation

Previous

Click this to go to the previous unconfirmed and unlocked segment.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Up Arrow

Next

Click this to move the cursor to the next unconfirmed and unlocked segment.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Down Arrow

Activate Row

Position the cursor in a target segment, and select this to activate that row.

When a row is active you can edit that target segment.

Normally, Studio uses implicit row activation. That is, when you position the cursor in a row, Studio activates that row. You only need to use this command if you have switched off implicit row activation. To switch implicit row activation on and off, click File Menu> Options > Editor > Enable Implicit Row Activation.

Find

Click this to find text in the active document, the page currently displayed in the active translation memory or in a selection. The Find and Replace dialog box is displayed.

Shortcut commands: Press Ctrl+F

Press F4 to find the next instance of your search text entered in the Find and Replace dialog box during the current session.

Press Shift+F4 to find a previous instance of your search text entered in the Find and Replace dialog box during the current session.

Editing

Replace

Click this to find and replace text in the active document, the page currently displayed in the active translation memory or in a selection. The Find & Replace dialog box is displayed.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+Shift+F

Select All

Click this to select everything in the active document.

Shortcut command: Ctrl+A

NOTE

 This option is disabled when a translation unit is open.
