Opening a File for Translation

This topic describes how to open an *.sdlxliff file for translation. You can open files from the Files view if you are working with files in a project or by using the Translate Single Document command if you are working with a single file. You can also quickly open a file for translation by drag-and-dropping it from your computer into the Editor View Navigation Pane or into the Editor Window.

NOTE

If you received your files in a package for translation, you must first open the package before you can open the files for translation.

  1. Click the Files button in the navigation pane. All of the files in the active project are displayed in the Files view.

  2. In the box at the top of the Files view navigation pane, select the required target language. Project files for the target language are displayed on the right.

  3. Right-click the file and select Open for Translation from the shortcut menu. (you will notice that the files have been converted to SDLXLIFF format). The file opens in the Editor view. Project translation memories, AutoSuggest dictionaries and termbases are automatically opened in the Editor view.

  4. If you are working with a GroupShare server-based project, you are prompted to check out the file from the GroupShare Project Server. Select Check out and edit the file to check out and open the file in the Editor.

NOTE

When you are finished with your translation and have saved and closed the document, switch to the Files view, right-click on the file that you have just edited and then select Check in.

To open a file using Translate  Document:

  1. Select File > Open > Translate Single Document from the Ribbon. The Open Document dialog box is displayed.

  2. Navigate to the project folder containing the *.sdlxliff file, select the file and click Open. The Open Document dialog box is displayed.

  3. If the Select Project File dialog box is displayed, the file you are opening is already part of an existing project. To create a new translation, select Create New Project File and click OK. The Open Document dialog box is displayed.

  1.  The *.sdlxliff file opens in the Editor window ready for translation.  Default translation memories and termbases are automatically opened in the Editor view.
