Editor Window Components

The Editor displays both the document to be translated and the document translation side by side. The source language document appears on the left and the target language version on the right. The content of both documents is broken down into segments. You can only edit the target language segments.

Editor Columns

The first column displays segment numbers. Only one number is displayed for each segment pair as the source and target segments are aligned with each other by default. You can choose not to display segment numbers. The source and target segments can also be worked with as two separate lists.
Between the source and target segment columns is the segment status column. This column contains a variety of information about the target language segments. For example, it can indicate the current translation status of the segment.
To the right of the target language segments is the document structure column. It displays a code that tells you where the segment text appears in the source document. Click on the code in this column to display a description telling you where the segment appears in the source document. If you prefer, you can choose not to display the document structure column. For example, if you want to create a larger editing space.

Status Bar Information

As you translate and confirm your translations, statistics about the overall document and the active segment are displayed on the Studio status bar.

The status bar displays information about:

Option	Description
Active Filter	The active display filter shows the current criteria for filtering the segments in the Editor window. Click the Active Display Filter icon to open the Display Filter drop-down menu to change the filtering criteria.
INS/OVR	When you press Insert or INS o n you keyboard, you turn Overtype mode on or off. When you are editing text in Overtype mode, OVR appears on the status bar. This means that you are typing new characters over the existing characters. When you are not in Overtype mode, INS appears on the status bar. This means that you are inserting characters into existing text instead of overtyping that text.
	This shows the percentage/number of characters, words or segments that have not been translated in the document. If you are counting by characters, the count includes all of the characters that are not translated except for spaces and tags. Recognized tokens are counted.
	This shows the percentage/number of characters, words or segments that are set to draft. If you are counting by characters, the count includes all of the characters that are not translated except for spaces and tags. Recognized tokens are counted.
	This shows the percentage/number of characters, words or segments that have been translated (confirmed) in the document. If you are counting by characters, the count includes all of the characters that are translated except for spaces and tags. Recognized tokens are counted.
	This shows the number of characters in the active segment. This count includes all of the characters within the translatable text except for tags. Spaces and recognized tokens are counted.
	This shows the penalty points accumulated in the active document against the number of penalty points allowed in the Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) configuration. Studio automatically calculates penalty points as reviewers give feedback on a translation using the metrics defined in the TQA configuration attached to the project file.

NOTE	To change how the confirmation statistics are displayed, double-click on the task bar. The Display Settings dialog box is displayed where you can change your settings.

Document Structure

Document structure is shown in a number of ways:

The document name tag appears at the start of a document.
Segments are individually numbered.
The document structure column indicates where the segment appeared in the document. For example, TC = table cell and H1 = header 1.
The document name tag appears when the document contains merged files. It indicates where one file ends and the next one begins.

Active Document

You can have more than one document open in the Editor, but only one can be displayed at any time. The currently displayed document is known as the active document.

Each document is displayed in its own window and the document name appears at the top of the window on a tab. To make a document the active document, click the document name tab. Alternatively, select a document in the navigation tree and the selected document becomes the active document.

Active Row

There are multiple segments displayed at the same time in the Editor window. However, only one of these can be selected at any time and this row is known as the active row. When a row is the active row, a lookup in the translation memory and termbase is automatically performed. You can only edit the target segment for the active row.

To make a row the active row, click in the segment numbers column or the target segment column for that segment in the Editor window.

NOTE	If you do not have the Enable implicit row activation option selected, you have to manually activate the row by confirming a previous segment or by selecting Translation > Activate Row from the menu bar.

Selecting Rows

You can select an individual row or multiple rows. If you select multiple rows you can merge, split, lock, unlock and change the status of multiple segments. You can select multiple rows and then right-click in the segment number column of the last selected row to select different actions from the shortcut menu. Do one of the following to select multiple rows:

Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the segment number column of each row that you want to select.
Place your cursor in a target segment, hold down the Alt+Shift key and press the Up Arrow or Down Arrow to select rows.
Place your cursor in a target segment, hold down the Alt key and press the Up Arrow or Down Arrow to move from one segment to the next. When the target segment you want to select is highlighted with a black square, press Space to select the row.

Editing the Target Language Segments

To edit a target segment, simply start typing in the target segment box. To find out more about translating in the Editor window, see Translating and Reviewing Documents.

Saving Documents

When you save a document in the Editor window, it is saved as a bilingual *.sdlxliff file. The *.sdlxliff file name comprises:

The name of the document being translated.
The translate from and to languages.
The file extension *.sdlxliff.

For example, a source document named Sample.doc, being translated from English (US) to German (Germany) would be saved in the Editor window:

Sample.doc_en_us_de_de.SDLXLIFF.
