How to Create a File Type

You might want to create a specific file type, for example to handle XML files created by other applications. The new file type can be an XML or a text file type.

To create a file type:

  1. Access the appropriate dialog box. See Finding the Right Set of File Type Options for more information.

  2. Select File Types from the navigation tree on the left. The File Types page is displayed. The existing file types are listed both in the navigation tree and in the File Types pane on the right.

  3. Click New. The Create File Type wizard is displayed.

  4. Select a category of file type from the Select Type options. The Create File Type wizard displays the dialog boxes you need to complete, as follows.

  5. Complete the File Type Information page

  6. If you chose to create an XML file type, complete the following pages:

  1. Complete the Save File Type page to save the new file type.

The new file type is now created and placed at the top of the list of file types. See Why the Order of File Types is Important.

After you have created the file type, you can Edit the file type settings.

See XML File Types for a summary of all the XML file settings. See Text File Types for a summary of all the text file settings.
