Microsoft Word and RTF File Types

You can use the following settings to specify how SDL Trados Studio handles Microsoft Word and RTF File Types documents.

The file type options for RTF and Word 2003 are identical. However, the settings for RTF and Word file types are stored separately.

Use these settings to...


Specify the items that are available on the applicable QuickInsert toolbar, displayed in Editor view.

Order of text boxes Word 2000-2003 and RTF only)

Specify the order in which text boxes are handled.

Non-translatable styles

Specify what text to exclude from translation, based on the text style.

Non-translatable footnotes (Word 2000-2003 and RTF only)

Specify what footnote text to exclude from translation.

In the past, RTF files were used to produce Winhelp files. SDL Trados Studio provides non-translatable footnotes to allow you to easily translate such files.

Non-translatable texts (Word 2000-2003 and RTF only)

Specify text to exclude from translation.

Other Settings (Word 2000-2003 and RTF only)

Other Settings (Word 2007-2010 only)

Choose miscellaneous options, such as whether to process document properties.

SDL Trados Studio cannot open a Word document that has Word's Track Changes enabled, but these settings include an option to allow SDL Trados Studio to open a document with unaccepted changes if Word's Track Changes is disabled.

Font mapping

Specify fonts to use in the target document, to replace specified fonts in the source document.

Tag Verification

Specify the checks that SDL Trados Studio does on tags, for example, check if tags have been inserted, deleted, or moved.
