Which File Types Are Supported

SDL Trados Studio can process many file types. The table below lists the file types that SDL Trados Studio supports.

Some files need preparation before SDL Trados Studio can translate them. These files are noted as such in the table below. The preparation required for all file types is described in How to Prepare and Post-Process Files.

You can add support for additional text file types and XML file types. Click here for more information about creating a file type.

NOTE

Unless otherwise specified, SDL Trados Studio has all the resources to process each file type: you do not need to install the application associated with the file type.

However, you do need the appropriate application installed to preview the file.

QuarkXPress 7and 8 (CopyFlow Gold plug-in)

SDL Trados Studio supports single stories exported to XTG (XPress Tagged Text) in QuarkXPress version 7 and 8.

SDL Trados Studio supports multiple stories exported to TAG format in QuarkXPress version 7 and 8 using the CopyFlow Gold plug-in (an XTension by Napsys www.napsys.com).  

 

All files must have Unicode (UTF - 16) encoding.

QuickSilver

SDL Trados Studio cannot process native QuickSilver files. However, you can convert them to a TRADOStag (TTX) file in SDL Trados 2007 and then process them in SDL Trados Studio. Click here for more information.

RTF

Bilingual RTF files

SDL Trados Studio cannot process Bilingual RTF files that were created when translating a document in Microsoft Word with SDL Trados Translator's Workbench in previous versions of SDL Trados. If the file was in a native Word .doc format, this process happened behind the scenes.

SDL Edit (ITD)

SDL Trados Studio supports ITD files, created in SDLX or SDL TMS.

SDL Trados Studio supports SDL XLIFF files.

SGML

SDL Trados Studio does not process native SGML files. However, you can convert them to a TradosTag (TTX) file in SDL Trados 2007 and then process them in SDL Trados Studio. Click here for more information.

Bilingual RTF files

SDL Trados Studio cannot process Bilingual RTF files that were created when translating a document in Microsoft Word with SDL Trados Translator's Workbench in previous versions of SDL Trados. If the file was in a native Word .doc format, this process happened behind the scenes.

WorldServer

SDL Trados Studio supports WorldServer files. These can be opened as part of a WorldServer package or you can open them directly in SDL Trados Studio.
