Language resources control the process of segmenting source document text ready for translation memory to be applied to the segments. Language resources are stored in the form of lists and rules. There is a set of default language resources for every language supported by SDL Trados Studio. In addition you can create a Language Resource Template that contains a modified set of language resources.
When you create a new translation memory you can:
Accept the default language resources for each language in the new translation memory.
Edit the default language resources for the new translation memory.
Select a language resource template that you have created. The language resources in the template are applied to the new translation memory.
Select an existing translation memory. The language resources in the selected translation memory are applied to the new translation memory.
These are the lists are rules that comprise the language resources:
Ordinal Follower List |
Ordinal followers are words which normally follow numbers in text. In some cases numbers are followed by a full stop (.) and an ordinal noun. Because a full stop usually indicates the end of a sentence, having full stops in the middle of the sentence text could result in text being incorrectly segmented. To avoid this problem SDL Trados Studio maintains a list of ordinal followers. When source text is being segmented a full stop followed by an ordinal follower is ignored. In this example, because Juni is present in the default list of ordinal followers, the full stop after 30 will be ignored and the segment will end with statt.
Die Veranstaltung findet am 30. Juni statt.

Abbreviation List |
By default a full stop is considered to indicate the end of a segment. However, full stops also appear in abbreviations and this can result in incorrect segmentation of source text. To avoid this problem SDL Trados Studio maintains a list of abbreviations. When source text is being segmented a full stop after a recognized abbreviation is ignored. |
Variable List |
Some items are translated automatically when a translation memory is applied to segment text. If you do not want an item to be translated, add the item to the Variable list. For example, you may not want to a company name to be translated. Adding an item to the variable list identifies the item as content which should never be translated By default this list is empty. |
Segmentation Rules |
Segmentation rules determine how source document text is segmented before translation memory matching takes place. There are default segmentation rules and you can edit these or create new rules. |
Language resource templates are created and maintained in the Translation Memories view.
