Where to Select your Translation Memories
Creating Default Translation Memory Selections
Changing Translation Memory Selections for the Active Document
The first time you create a translation for a language pair, the translation memories you select become the default translation memories for the language pair. You can also specify default translation memory settings using the Language Pairs options in the Options dialog box.
You can select translation memories when you use the New Project wizard to create a new project and if you use the Open Document command on the Standard toolbar to create a translation. You can change your selected translation memories in the Project Settings dialog box.
A language pair is used to store settings relating to translation from a specific source language into a specific target language. Resources and options are typically configured for use across all language pairs to which they apply. Multilingual resources, such as termbases and server-based translation memories, may apply to more than one language pair. Bilingual resources, such as file-based translation memories, only apply to a specific language pair.
Individual exceptions to settings defined across all language pairs can be defined at an individual language pair level. You may want to specify translation memory selections at the individual language pair level if you want to:
Use different translation memories for a particular language pair.
Use a different order of the translation memories in the cascade for a particular language pair.
Enable lookups, updates or concordance searching differently in that translation memory for a particular language pair.
For example, suppose you add a multilingual translation memory at the All Language Pairs level that contains English to German and English to French language pairs. However, you do not want to use this translation memory for English to French and instead want to select another translation memory. To do that, select the translation memory that you want to use at the individual language pair settings instead of the All Language Pairs level.
Default translation memory selections for language pairs are stored under Language Pairs in the Options dialog box. The first time that you open a document using the Open Document command for a language pair, if default translation memory selections for the language pair do not currently exist, the translation memory or memories you select for the new translation will automatically become the default translation memories for the language pair. These selections are added to the Options dialog box where you can view or change them at any time.
Alternatively, you can display the Options dialog box and use the Language Pairs settings to create default translation memory selections.
If the default translation memory selections are not correct for the active document, you can change them. You can select new translation memories and you can de-select default translation memories.
Document specific translation memory selections are made in the Project Settings dialog box.
The Project Settings dialog box displays translation memory information for all files in the project and if you have a document open in the Editor view, it displays translation memory information for the active document. It lists the translation memories that will be applied to the project files and active document and shows which ones will be used for lookups and searches and whether filters and penalties should be applied to lookup results. You can remove translation memories from the list and select new ones. You can also change any of the settings associated with each translation memory.
The selections you make in the Project Settings dialog box are project specific and are applied to all documents in the project every time you open the documents. To display the Project Settings dialog box for the active project, select the Project > Project Settings from the menu bar.
NOTE |
If you started a translation using the Open Document command, a project is automatically created. |
