A termbase is a database containing terms, term translations, and term-related information, for example, a definition of the term. Before you start translating a document, you open a termbase and while you are translating the document, you retrieve translations from the termbase. You can use these translations to translate document segments. This is known as inserting a term translation.
While translating you can add terms to the SDL MultiTerm termbase, where it will be available for selection in the future.
In SDL Trados Studio you can work with both local and server-based termbases:
A local termbase is one that is stored on your computer. Other users cannot access local termbases.
A server-based termbase is one that is stored on a server. A server-based termbase can be used by anyone who can log on to the server. Server-based termbases are accessed through the Internet or through an intranet. Once you have logged on to the server where the termbase is located, you can work with the termbase in exactly the same way that you work with local termbases.
The key difference between local and server-based termbases is that multiple users can work with the same server-based termbase at the same time.
