Step 3: Set Alignment and TM Options

To make sure that you only import translation units which respect a certain quality level, you can configure the Alignment Tool to consider various tuning options before sending the alignment results to your translation memory.

To display this page, click Next on the Align Documents wizard.

Set the Alignment Options

Depending on the extraction settings available for the type of aligned file, Studio extracts a number of segments from the files you selected for alignment. Before starting the alignment, however, you can tell Studio to cherry-pick only the segment pairs that meet a certain quality level.

Move the Alignment quality value slider to a value between 1 and 100, considering whether the source and target texts are generally parallel or not. If your texts have mostly 1:1 correspondences between the source and the target segments, you can drag the slider towards a lower value. On the other hand, if you know your texts have mostly 1:many and many:1 correspondences between the segments, drag the slider towards a higher value.

Technical translations are generally parallel where each source segment generally corresponds to a target segment. Conversely, marketing or creative translations are less parallel as the translator has to split, merge, delete, insert or reorder many segments in order to match the creativity of the source text. This makes these texts more difficult to align and require that you set a higher alignment quality value so that Studio only imports the segment pairs that are assessed as highly reliable pairs.

Set the TM Import Options

Use the TM Import options to specify your settings for importing the alignment results into the translation memory:

Box

Description

Apply Field Values

If the translation memory you are importing into has custom fields, you can specify what values should be placed in these fields for the imported translation units.

Click Edit to display the Field Values dialog box. For each field, specify or select a value and click OK.

Import translation units as plain text

When this option is selected, all formatting in the import file is ignored and the translation unit content is imported as plain text.

This may be useful if you do not want to transfer any tags from the aligned documents in order to keep the new translation units consistent with the existing TM data.

Exclude language variants

When this option is selected, translation units for variants of the selected source and target language will not be imported.

For example if you are importing into an English (United Kingdom) / German (Germany) translation memory and you select this option, any English (United States) / German (Germany) translation units in the import file will not be imported.

Overwrite existing translation units

When this option is selected, translation units that have the same source text as an imported translation unit are replaced with the imported translation unit. This means that only the translated portion of the translation unit is replaced and therefore this prevents there being duplicate translations for the same source segment.
