Overview: Running Batch Processes

About

A batch process is a process that is performed by the system on project files, at your request. For example, the batch process named Word Count, performs a word count on selected files and the word count results can be seen in the SDL Trados Studio views and reports. Batch processes are known as batch tasks.

  • You can perform a batch task on a single file, a group of files or on an entire project.

  • You can select a number of batch tasks and put them into a task sequence; all of the tasks in the sequence are performed on the selected files.

Task Sequences

A task sequence contains multiple batch tasks. When you run a task sequence, all tasks in the sequence are performed on all selected files: the tasks are performed in the order in which they appear in the sequence. A number of batch task sequences are provided for you and you can also create new ones.

You can also create ad-hoc task sequences known as Custom sequences. Custom sequences are created for a single use; they are not saved.

NOTE

You cannot create custom task sequences in SDL Trados Studio Freelance.

Batch Task Settings

There are settings associated with each batch task and you can view and edit these. For example, if you choose the Pre-translate Files task, there are settings that define the minimum translation memory match value and what status should be given to 100% matches and context matches.

The settings that are displayed are the current, project settings. If you edit the settings in the Batch Processing wizard, the changes are also made to the project settings.

Accessing Batch Processing Options

You select batch tasks and task sequences from the Home tab > batchtasks.png Batch Tasks. Batch tasks and sequences available on the:

  • Projects view > Home tab > Tasks group > Batch Tasks are applied to the entire active project.

  • Editor view > Home tab > File Actions group > Batch Tasks are applied to active document.

  • Files view > Home tab > File Actions group > Batch Tasks  are applied to selected files.

Viewing Batch Task Data

When you run a batch task, the data generated by the task can be viewed in a report. For example, the Analyze Files report contains translation analysis figures for a project; the data for the Analyze Files report is generated during project creation, when the Prepare task sequence is run.

Working with GroupShare Projects

If you perform a batch task on files that are from a GroupShare server-based project, the files will be automatically checked out from the GroupShare Project Server when you run the batch task. If there are files that are currently checked out by other users on the GroupShare server, you will not be able to perform the batch task on that file. A warning message indicating why the file is not selected for processing is displayed on the Files page of the Batch Processing wizard.

NOTE

After the batch task is completed and you close the Batch Processing wizard, if you are finished editing the files, you can check back in the files that were automatically checked out when you performed the batch task.
